President Elect: Beth Young,  ASID

Beth graduated from the Interior Design Internship in Denver, Colorado following her BA in psychology/sociology at the University of Denver.  She successfully passed the NCIDQ exam in 1977 and has been a professional member of ASID since that time, serving as Colorado Chapter president in 1982-84.   Starting at an office furniture dealership and then with two national design firms in Denver, she designed or served as project manager for large-scale corporate interiors projects for 8 years.   After moving to Staunton, Virginia, large-scale corporate interiors were no longer an option.  She and her husband Rich started their family and Beth started the interior design program at Mary Baldwin College based on the FIDER (now CIDA) guidelines in 1986.  She stayed connected while raising her family and teaching by bringing students to ASID events, also serving as Ethics and Appellations chair in 1996-97 and as the MBC representative to the board 1986-2007.

By Design, Beth’s private practice, was started in 1996 and has included both commercial and residential projects in and around the state.  Since leaving Mary Baldwin, she’s been able to focus on her design work as well as other volunteer activities including serving as chair of the Staunton Electoral Board.

Communications Director: Amy Gallo, Allied Member ASID

Amy started her journey with ASID when she was a student at James Madison University.  She was the 2003 Student Representative to the Board and loves the opportunities and friendships she created while holding that position. After graduation, Amy moved to the Metro DC area where she took a job as a designer for Reico Kitchen & Bath.  After four years of non-stop commuting, Amy and her husband moved to Richmond where she continued on with Reico.  She loves working hand-in-hand with her clients when selecting finishes and planning the layouts for their kitchens and baths.  She has also enjoyed designing multiple displays for the showroom and loves the chance to add a bit of contemporary spice to the traditional Richmond market.  When not at work, Amy enjoys remodeling her own home, as well as hiking and camping with her friends and family… when time allows.

Student Rep to the Board: Denise Pendleton, Student Member ASID, LEED GA

I have been on the Dean’s List every semester since freshman year and will be graduating in May 2012. Currently, I am the President of Virginia Tech’s ASID student chapter organization-IDEAS (Interior Design for Education and Sustainability). I am  involved with the Student Advisory Committee for Residence Life and Dining, club powder puff football, and BCM (Baptist Collegiate Administries). In March 2011, I attended KEM Studio in Kansas City, MO- a Virginia Tech sponsored studio. While being an active student, I think it is important to make time for yourself. Running, cooking, scrap-booking, and being a licensed cosmetologist are other creative outlets I enjoy in my spare time. I love being surrounded by people and jump at the chance to meet someone new. I hope to take my spark for sustainable design to a quaint firm where I can jump right in with two eager hands not afraid to get dirty!

Chapter Administrator: Sharlyn Underwood, ASID, LEED AP BD+C (Not a Board Member)

In addition to serving as Chapter Administrator, Sharlyn currently runs her own consulting business, Sharlyn Underwood, ASID, LEED AP. Some of her clients include the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), H2 Ecodesign and Community Housing Partners.

She was an inaugural member of the Radford University Interior Design Advisory Board. While in furniture sales, she served as president of the New River Valley Founders Chapter of Business Network International.

Sharlyn is the happy mother of a very cute little guy, Thacker, who was born in 2007. She also loves hiking, camping, listening to live music, and spending time with her dog, Sprout. Constantly pursuing her green passion, Sharlyn gardens with native plants, seeks books by inspiring authors (Rachel Carson, Barbara Kingsolver), and strives to live green in her personal life.
